American Falls, Idaho-based Safeway Inc. established in April 1915. Baptist pastor S. M. Skaggs condemned “the growing evil of installment purchasing” among grocers and storekeepers. Skaggs was his store where customers picked items from shelves and paid at the register. M.B. Skaggs, S.M.’s son, bid $1088 (equivalent to $31500 in 2022) for the store. Three years later, he opened in Burley, Idaho. Skaggs expanded his business with Idaho and Montana locations. In 1926, M.B. Skaggs bought a grocer and coffee company, Skaggs Cash Store and Skaggs United, and convinced his five brothers to develop 428 outlets in 10 states. Skaggs merged his firm with 322 Sam Seelig firm stores and renamed it Safeway Inc. because he thought the chain would outlive him. Cash was the “safe way” to buy groceries. Store bills triggered the Great Depression for many households. Later that year, Merrill Lynch founder Charles E. Merrill envisioned West Coast grocery consolidation. Skaggs accepted $1.5 million and 30,000 shares of the merging corporation for W.R.H. Weldon’s 322 Safeway locations. The Skaggs/Safeway merger made M.B. Skaggs CEO. Safeway joined NYSE two years later. In the 1930s, the supermarket industry introduced pound prices, “sell by” dates, nutritional data, and parking lots. The deal made Safeway the largest western grocery chain. In 1929, the company moved from Reno, Nevada to Oakland, California, then to Pleasanton in 1996. The company expanded into various US states, Canada, UK, Australia, West Germany, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, until 2000. Non-West Coast expansion failed. Albertson’s offered 9.4 billion in 2014. Albertsons absorbed Safeway on January 30, 2015. Kroger wants Albertsons for $24.6 billion.
