HBO Now was HBO’s standalone streaming service, introduced in 2015 to offer an alternative to traditional cable-based access. It allowed users to subscribe directly to HBO content and stream it on demand, bypassing any need for a television provider.
Founded in 1972, HBO has long been associated with premium television. Headquartered in New York, the company rolled out HBO Now in response to changing consumer behaviors and the rise of cord-cutting. This platform gave digital users the flexibility to access HBO without any cable contract.
By February 2018, HBO Now had grown to around 5 million active subscribers. The service included access to much of HBO’s programming library, series, movies, documentaries, and specials, with a few notable exceptions due to rights issues. Licensed films were also available from partners such as Time Warner, 20th Century Fox, and Universal Pictures.
The app worked on a broad range of devices, from smartphones and tablets to streaming boxes, gaming consoles, and smart TVs. Compatible systems included Chromecast, Apple TV, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Android TV, and Samsung Smart TVs.
Subscription to the service was priced at $14.99 per month. A seven-day free trial was usually available to new users, who would be automatically billed if not canceled in time. Canceling was permitted at any stage, with access continuing until the end of the billing cycle.
Although the service eventually merged into HBO Max, HBO Now represented a key moment in HBO’s pivot to digital, on-demand content delivery.
